Paed Tidt
Universal protection
Full Description
The Paed Tidt Yant (แปดทิศ), meaning “Eight Directions,” is one of the oldest and most sacred protection designs in the Sak Yant tradition. Its origin dates back to ancient Lanna and Khmer spiritual systems, later absorbed into Thai Buddhist yantra practices during the Ayutthaya Kingdom (14th–18th centuries). The design’s geometry represents the eight cardinal directions, each governed by a different Buddha image and mantra. These Buddhas correspond to the eight days of the Buddhist week (Wednesday is divided into day and night), and each direction’s Buddha offers unique protection — from warding off dangers and enemies to ensuring safe travel and good fortune. The central circle or star symbolises the practitioner at the centre of the universe, surrounded by the sacred protection of the Buddhas. The arrows pointing outward deflect harm and evil influences from all directions. The Khom (ancient Khmer) script encircling or flanking the design contains protective Katha (mantras) and invocations of the Buddhas’ blessings. Traditionally, the Paed Tidt Yant was given to warriors, travellers, and monks who often journeyed through remote or dangerous lands. It was considered an invisible spiritual compass — ensuring one would never lose direction physically or morally. Over time, it became one of the most respected all-round protective Sak Yants, often tattooed after the Gao Yord (Nine Spires) as a secondary layer of protection. In modern practice, it’s often worn by those who travel frequently, work in unpredictable environments, or seek a sense of peace and divine protection in all directions of life.

Spiritual Significance
The Paed Tidt Yant represents the eight directions of the universe, each guarded by a Buddha facing that direction. It is designed to provide complete protection wherever the wearer travels, ensuring safety, luck, and spiritual guidance in all places and circumstances. The circular or star-like formation of arrows symbolises movement, orientation, and awareness — meaning you are protected no matter which way you turn.
